Sonny J.H. Wong, MD, FACC, RPHS

Drawn to cardiovascular care after witnessing a life-saving moment in the ER, Dr. Sonny Wong chose a specialty that allowed him to solve problems and work directly with patients.

Originally from New Zealand, Dr. Wong completed his internal medicine and cardiology training at the University of Hawaii and the University of Nevada, respectively, earning board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both fields. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and, since 1994, has been caring for patients in Hawaii. He also serves as a professor on the volunteer clinical faculty at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.

“Helping patients through their health journey and providing quick, compassionate support,” Dr. Wong says, reflecting his approach to medicine with humility and empathy. “It's fulfilling to see improvements in their quality of life. I make sure to be thorough and communicate clearly with patients and their families to achieve the best results. I’m also fortunate to work with an outstanding clinical and support team who share these values and are essential to our practice’s success.”

Since opening his Kailua practice 20 years ago, Dr. Wong has expanded to Waipahu to fill a void left by another cardiologist, and to Maui to address the shortage of specialists. “Serving these diverse communities across Hawaii has been incredibly rewarding—building meaningful relationships while making a real difference where the need is greatest.”

With his heart still in his work, Dr. Wong balances his practice with family time and hobbies such as golf.
